天生没有痛楚的男孩短短32年的生命。
一个生来没有痛觉的男孩——詹姆斯，到11岁才开口说话。由于传染病肆虐、家庭变故，他开始了流浪的日子，遭遇各种奇事：有人利用他没有痛觉的身体贩卖灵药、有人收藏他成为展示品……“铁石心肠”的詹姆斯成为优秀的外科医生，在机理肉间挥汗操刀。
就拿卖灵药的表演来说，他们让詹姆斯假装疼痛，擦上药，伤口瞬间又长好了。于是在场的人纷纷掏钱买药，直到所谓的灵药被抢购一空为止。众人哪里知道，伤口的快速愈合根本不是药的作用，那完全是詹姆斯自身的特质!而那时年幼的詹姆斯又哪里知道他在做一件什么事呢?否则何来“利用”之辞?又怎么会说是“遭遇”呢?
其实，正因为他没有痛觉，他才会在做手术时，手都不抖一下，他不明白为什么在手术时人们会惧怕，会冒冷汗，会比他担忧几百倍几千倍。也正因如此，他不会有丝毫的犹豫，出奇的镇静，每时每刻都有极高的效率。他冰冷高傲的面庞，让他看起来没什么人情味儿。
的确是詹姆的遭遇啊。
直到他爱上女疯子多特，又瞬间失去她，詹姆斯开始感受到人类应有的七情六欲，开始懂得悲伤、流泪和身体的疼痛……
我能真切地感受到詹姆斯失去多特的痛苦以及他有了痛觉的改变。他“学会”犹豫了，他甚至为该穿哪一件衣服而犹豫，而事实上它只有两件可选择的外套而已。这当然并非重点，但显然告诉我们如此之大的反差。而在这之后没几年，詹姆斯就去了。
的确是詹姆斯的遭遇啊!我想他是在现实中挣扎着去的。
“痛”是身体的感觉;内心的痛是“痛苦”。以前的詹姆斯不懂，而当他终于弄懂的时候，他的生命变得那么脆弱。为何，为何?是他的直觉和感情习惯了被过度的理性和冷漠所贬抑?奈何，奈何!我也只能发出心酸过后的四个字了。
其实，詹姆斯的塑造者，即这部小说的作者，是通过詹姆斯作为医生对人体的探索的科学主义，和他本身的不近人情来引出被科学主义所抑的直觉与感情的。作为我本人来说，我认为人类的感情和直觉是否被科学主义和科技的高度发达而贬抑仍然是一个等待人们进一步讨论的问题。这一问题之于那些重感情的`人就如同机器人是否会控制人类的观点之于科学家和社会学家们一样。而我恰恰是哪一类重感情的人。
问题想到这里，我忽而觉得自己被推入了击退两难的境地，毕竟，我们都将成为古人，而将来会怎样，谁会有先知呢?只是霍金说过：“你所必须做的是你在所处的环境下做最大的努力。”事实上，人们已经意识到在某些领域科学与伦理等的冲突，并且在尽力避开这些敏感部位。克隆人被禁止以及科学本身的坎坷历程，已经向我们证明，那些令人敬重的品德高尚、精神可嘉的科学工作者们无时无刻不注重将科学的发展扶上正轨。
