保护臭氧层就是保护蓝天，保护地球生命。为了唤起公众环境保护意识，1995年1月23日联合国大会决定，每年的9月16日为国际保护臭氧层日(International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer，要求所有缔约国按照《关于消耗臭氧层物质的蒙特利尔议定书》及其修正案的目标，采取具体行动纪念这个日子。
已经过去的11届国际臭氧层保护日中，联合国环境规划署针对保护臭氧层确立了一些臭氧层保护日的主题。
2005年的主题为“善待臭氧，安享阳光”;2004年的主题为“拯救蓝天，保护臭氧层：善待我们共同拥有的地球”;2000年的“拯救我们的天空：保护你自己;保护臭氧层”;以及1998年的宣传主题为：“为了地球上的生命，请购买有益于臭氧层的产品”等。这些主题反映出对于保护臭氧层的作用，保护臭氧层的紧迫性和对于全社会共同保护臭氧层的倡议。
