俗话说：勤劳的鸟儿有窝栖。这对儿鸟夫妻还真有两下子，一个衔草含泥，一个砌墙铺地，把一个小小的巢做得极精致，铺设得极舒适。新屋落成的那天，鸟太太飞进飞出，叽叽！鸟先生飞出飞进，喳喳！惹得老宅主人兴起，噼哩啪啦放了一通鞭炮，吓得鸟先生和鸟太太窝在巢里半天不敢动，待到鞭炮声歇，两鸟相识而笑，交颈而眠，硝烟缭绕处不失时机地温存了一把。
俗话说：早起的鸟儿有虫吃。第一缕曙光便是它们的起床信号，鸟夫妻醒了，叽叽喳喳地开始唱歌。然后它们跳出鸟巢开始做早操。它们相互追逐，忽一下飞到枝头，忽一下落到地面的青草上，忽一下又飞到枝头，在泡桐紫色的'花朵间钻来钻去。这时候，皓首银髯白衫飘飘的老屋主人——一个清矍的老头儿走出了屋门，打个哈欠，伸个懒腰，慢悠悠地开始指东打西。露水打湿了鸟夫妻的羽毛，它们用鹅黄色的喙为对方梳理，霞光里，一路相逐而去。
晚霞醉了夕阳的辰光，倦鸟归巢，叽叽喳喳说个不休。这时候，老头儿在廊下悠悠地呷着清茶，小脚的老太太从厨房门里进进出出，满院饭菜飘香。
一日，老头儿正悠悠然呷着清茶，鸟夫妻扑楞楞地跌落在脚下，鸟先生翅膀根上肉模糊，无力地匍匐在老头儿脚下。老头儿急急地放下茶碗，大声唤老婆子快来！小脚老太太慌忙找出一个带红十字的小木箱，手脚麻利地上药，包扎，絮絮叨叨地说：造孽啊，弹弓打的……
鸟先生在老头儿床前的小窝里养了几天，老太太要拿小米来喂它，老先生摆摆手，他们看到鸟太太进进出出，叼来了小小的虫子，还有一堆儿不知名的黍粒。
下雨了。
鸟先生要出去觅食。鸟太太用唾沫抿了抿头上的羽毛，准备像往常一样跟鸟先生一块儿出去。喳喳，鸟先生摇头晃脑。叽叽，鸟太太也摇头晃脑。喳喳，鸟先生抖了抖翅膀，鸟太太眉眼下好像突然染了霞彩，乖乖地不动了。鸟先生又抖了抖翅膀，扑楞楞地飞走了。
起风了。
下雪了。
出太阳了。
寒号鸟冻了。
鸟夫妻的宝宝出生了。
老先生又放了一挂长长的鞭炮，鸟宝宝们听不见，它们一个个闭着眼睛，混沌地面对这个清朗的世界。
鸟先生抖开漂亮的羽毛，在泡桐的枝桠间飞上飞下，喳喳，它大叫。叽叽，它的太太在巢中和。喳喳，叽叽。它们谁也看不到谁，但是它们知道对方在哪，一唱一和里，说不尽的温馨和爱意，还有满足。
鸟先生独自出去觅食了。它不再等到天黑才回来，它一趟趟地返家，一次次倾听着巢中天籁一般的大合唱，叽叽叽，喳喳喳，然后，栖在泡桐树上一次次抖动漂亮的羽毛。
一日，鸟宝宝们都还睡着，鸟太太听到泡桐上传来陌生同类的叫声，鸟先生顾不得跟鸟太太道别，急急地出了巢，院里静了下来，鸟太太跳出巢，栖在泡桐树的枝桠上，呆呆地看老头儿专注地指东打西。
鸟太太感到寂寞了。
入夜，鞭炮声大作，有绚丽的花朵在天空绽放，照亮了漆黑的夜。这是鸟夫妻一家从来没有看到过的景象，美丽又壮观。它们一个个从鸟巢里伸出头来，叽叽喳喳说个不休。
正在灯下呷着清茶的老头踱出屋门，走到鸟巢下，听着热热闹闹的鸟语，忍不住咕哝了一句：还不如几只鸟呢，白眼狼，白养他们了，过年也不回来看老子一眼。
老太太颠儿颠儿地走出来，牵着老头儿的手说：回去吧，小心着凉，这不还有我吗？
合欢开了的时候，女贞绿了一冬的老叶终于倦了，纷纷飘落，为新芽腾位儿。鸟宝宝们开始学着出去觅食。初始只在院落中转几圈便叫嚷着回了巢。慢慢地它们开始到院落外面去，后来去的更远些，再后来便一只只没了踪影，鸟夫妻的巢变得空落落的。
早上，鸟太太还在梳理它的红色羽毛，泡桐树上又传来同类的叫声。鸟太太随鸟先生跳上泡桐枝头，对入侵者叽叽地叫，对方毫不示弱，拖着比它更响亮的声音应和。鸟先生颈羽倒竖，对着鸟太太做攻击状：喳喳喳！然后，与入侵者相互追逐而去。
鸟太太伤心了。
鸟先生再没回来过。
忽一日，院中来了许多神情凝重的人们，一律的黑色衣服。进得屋去，听不到大声喧哗，只有低低的问候。然后一拨拨地走了，对送至门口的老太太说：节哀顺变吧。
没过多少时日，鸟太太又看到了同样的一幕，有人低低地叹息：唉，这就叫相濡以沫吧。
鸟太太栖在泡桐浓密的枝叶间发呆，一滴清泪从它圆圆的眼睛中滴落下来。
如果沧海枯了，还有一滴泪。
为那已然成为传说的最后的爱情。
从此，鸟太太再看不到老头在清晨的院中指东打西，看不到老头在黄昏的院中呷着清茶的身影。也再没看到过小脚儿老太忙进忙出的身影，没闻到过院中的饭菜飘香。
鸟太太飞到巢里，奋力地扑打着巢壁，那看似铜铸一般的鸟巢啪地落到地上，碎了。
鸟太太在暮色里飞去。不知哪里飘来的讨厌的声音：在天愿做比翼鸟……
