I am delighted to know that you will be able to visit me for a week during the National Day holiday. I am looking forward to your visit and to the opportunity to catch up. Welcome to my home in Nanjing!
As you know, Nanjing has many places of interest to see, to discover, and to enjoy. Among its historical sites are stone city wall, the Confucius Temple with its magnificent night view, and Dr. Sun Yetsen's Mausoleum. With all its universities, Nanjing is a cultural center, offering an abundance of artistic and musical performances. It's also a city of beautiful gardens and parks, such as the Xuanwu Lake Park. With all these features, we will have a fun-filled week, especially that in early-October, there are many sunny and mild days for outdoor activities. So, I would suggest visiting these places first, and deciding on the others as our week develops.

今天的中国并非最早的中国，中国一词作为地域、文化和政治疆域概念，其内涵也经历了不断扩大和变化的过程。最早的中国也仅指在群雄竞争的过程中兴起的王国都城，以及以都城为中心的社会政治实体所处的地域，尤其是它的中心区域。
中国古代文明发展的三个历史阶段：邦国时代（仰韶—龙山时代），王国时代（夏、商、周）和帝国时代（秦汉以至明清）。其中，最具有里程碑意义的是王国即早期王朝的诞生。随着二里头遗址与二里头文化的崛起，华夏文明由多元的邦国时期进入了一体的王朝时期。
二里头遗址位于洛阳盆地东部的偃师市境内，遗址上最为丰富的文化遗存属二里头文化，其时代约为公元前第二千纪的前半叶，即公元前1800-1500年，相当于古代文献中的夏、商王朝时期。著名的“二里头文化”即由此而得名。二里头遗址及其文化拥有两大特质：一点，是指其都邑中心的庞大化与复杂化；一面，是指其大范围的文化辐射，形成中国乃至东亚地区最早强势“核心文化”。
二里头的发现，是徐旭生先生凭借文献踏查“夏墟”的时候发现的，给我们的启示是：文献中关于古史的传说并非全是无稽之谈；经过系统梳理考证的文献，可以作为我们探索中国早期文明的\'有益线索。许老师认为因为迄今为止没有发现像甲骨文那样可以确证考古学文化主人身份的当时的文字材料，二里头王朝的归属问题仍旧是待解之谜。
最早的文明之所以诞生于中原的原因：东方“大两河流域”长江和黄河流域：农业起源的温床；四方辐辏的交通战略要地；两大农业的交汇地带；两大自然和文化板块的结合部。而洛阳盆地，正具有以上多种特征，从而成为早期王朝建国立都的理想生境。建于盆地内的都邑二里头遗址都分布在盆地北侧宽广的二级阶地上，显现出以盆地周围山脉为屏障，以整个盆地为“大郭”的气势。
从城市的规划显出王都之气，二里头遗址可以分为中心区和一般居住活动区两大部分。中心区由宫殿区、围垣作坊区、祭祀活动区和若干贵族聚居区。一般居住活动区常见小型地面式和半地穴式以及随葬品以陶器为主的小型墓葬。二里头遗址是迄今可以确认的最早的具有明确规划的都邑，其布局开创中国古代都城规划制度的先河。
最能表述二里头遗址的是，二里头的中国之最：最早的城市干道网、双轮车辙；最早的宫城（紫禁城）：最早的中轴线布局的宫室建筑群，最早的大型四合院和多进院落宫室建筑；最早的宫城（围垣官营作坊区），最早的青铜器铸造作坊，最早的绿松石器铸造作坊；最早的青铜礼器群；最早的具有明确规划的大型都邑。
