第二天早上，凡卡还没睡醒，老板就来到凡卡睡的墙角。揪起凡卡的耳朵，大骂：“都几点了，还不起床！快起来干活，今天不按时起床罚你今天中午不准吃饭！”“啪！”老板娘狠狠地关上了门。凡卡捂着耳朵，伤心地哭了起来。他赶紧穿好衣服去给老板干活了。
到了中午，凡卡肚子饿了，可老板不让他吃饭。凡卡来到晚上睡的墙角，他想：爷爷现在收到信了吗？或许还没有，也许过两天就会收到。爷爷看完信后，一定会来把我接回家的，爷爷很爱我的……
“喂，凡卡，过来，把这一袋麦子背到仓库去！”店里的一个伙计喊道。凡卡又想：没事儿，只要我再坚持几天，爷爷就会把我接走的，加油吧，凡卡！凡卡跑过去把那一袋装满了麦子的袋子背在肩上，袋子很重可凡卡还是坚持下来了。
一袋接着一袋，就在凡卡快被累的那一瞬间，他累的趴在桌子上，睡着了。
过了一个钟头，他怀着甜蜜的希望睡熟了。在他的梦里，他看见一铺暖炕，炕上坐着他的爷爷，翘着两条腿，正在念他的信……泥鳅在炕边走来走去，摇着尾巴……
“凡卡，凡卡……”凡卡费力地睁开双眼，他在微弱的烛光下看见了一个人。“爷爷！爷爷……你终于来带我回家了”“是啊，凡卡，我们走吧，回到我们该去的地方。”凡卡牵着爷爷的手，慢慢地走出了老板的家……凡卡心想：“yeah，我终于可以离开这个黑暗的地方。”
这是一个明媚的早晨，温暖的阳光照射在凡卡脸上……原来凡卡昨晚爬在桌子上做了个梦。过了很久，凡卡动也没动，原来昨晚凡卡已经饿了……但凡卡脸上却带有一丝微笑，窗外的鸟儿“叽叽”地叫起来，仿佛为凡卡的人生画上了完美的句号……
