（2）突然，埃里克大声地尖叫起来：“看，那边！”他那胖乎乎的小手激动地拍打着椅子的扶手，眼睛瞪得大大的。
（3）我环视四周，发现了埃里克兴奋的来源。那是一个老人，穿着一件沾满油污并且已经破烂不堪的外套，裤子又宽又大，只剩下了半截，脚上的鞋也破了，脚趾露出了鞋外。由于离他太远而没有闻到他身上的臭味，但我敢肯定他自己一定能闻到。
（4）他正在招手，然后又拍起了巴掌：“嘿，过来，宝贝，到这边来。我看到你了，伙计。”老人对埃里克喊道。
（5）我和丈夫交换了一下眼神：那个古怪而且令人讨厌的老家伙正在扰我们可爱的儿子。
（6）我们点的东西端上来了，那个老人又在对面开始大喊：“你会玩躲躲猫吗？哈，瞧，这小家伙会玩躲躲猫了。”
（7）没有谁会认为那个老人是在故作姿态，但我和丈夫尴尬极了。我们默默地吃着，埃里克却不肯安静，他在那个老人的怂恿下玩起了躲躲猫游戏。他在餐桌之间跑来跑去，当他躲得很 好，老人看不到他表示认输时，他就咯略笑着跑出来。我和丈夫觉得，埃里克从来没玩得这么开心过。
（8）我们用完了餐，支夫去停车场取车，我与埃里克留下来结账。结完帐往外走时，我发现那个老人正泰然自若地坐在餐厅门口旁边。
（9）“上帝，在他对埃里克说话之前，让我们离开这里吧。”当我们走近那个老人时，我背过脸，因为我不想闻到他身上散发出来的味道。此时，我紧紧抓着埃里克的小手，生怕谁会把他抢走一样。
（10）可是，埃里克挣脱了我的手，向那老人的怀里投去。事情发生得太突然了，我还没来得及阻止，一个浑身臭味的老人和一个天真无邪的小男孩之间的'关系就达到了升华，仿佛深爱着的祖孙俩．
（11）埃里克温顺地靠在老人那着破烂的衣服的肩膀上，他把他对人的完全信任以及他的爱付诸了行动。老人闭起了眼睛，泪水沾满了他的睫毛，然后滑下脸颊。他那苍老的手布满了污垢、伤痕以及老茧，他轻轻地抱着孩子，温柔地抚摸着孩子的背。
（12）没有哪两个人会像他们那样，在这么短的时间就产生这样深厚的感情。我站在那里，呆住了。
（13）老人怜爱地看着怀里的埃里克。我知道，埃里克离开他的怀抱，对他来说是一件痛苦的事情。但埃里克最终还是回到了我的身边。老人激动地说：“上帝保佑你，夫人，你给了我一份最好的圣诞礼物。”
（14）我没有说一个字，因为我知道我无法承受这一句真诚的感谢。
（15）我抱起埃里克，向我们的汽车跑去。在车上，我紧紧抱着埃里克，终于忍不住哭了，边哭边说：“上帝，请宽恕我吧！”
（16）我明白了：那一刻，孩子看到的只是一个喜欢他的老人，而母亲看到的却只是一件衣服。
