他回到家，脱掉鞋，就翻开书包，把书拿出来一看，顿时他的眉毛拧成了一个疙瘩。原来那本书的封面有好几处都坏了，书里面有些页已经损坏，有的还掉了下来，有的已经被撕开了大口子。张明心想：这书已经坏成这个样子，如果不补一补，肯定不行了，再看下去就会散架子的。
于是，他从抽屉里拿出剪刀、透明胶布、橡皮和胶水。他先用剪刀剪下透明胶布，再用它把裂开的'那些页粘好，再把书里掉下的页用胶水粘上，最后用橡皮把书上画的道道擦掉。他把书修补完后，心里美滋滋的，然后就看起书来。
第二天，当他把书送回学校图书馆的时候，旁边的同学们都说“张明，我们要向你学习，要爱护图书。”张明听了，不好意思地低下了头，脸红得象个苹果。

When he failed to heal their disputes by his exhortations, he determined to give them a practical illustration of the evils of disunion; and for this purpose he one day told them to bring him a bundle of sticks. When they had done so, he placed the faggot into the hands of each of them in succession, and ordered them to break it in pieces. They each tried with all their strength, and were not able to do it.
