有个人听说了公孙龙，便前来求见，要求公孙龙收他做弟子。公孙龙见那人相貌平平，粗布衣帽，便问：“我不结交没有本领的人，不知你有什么本领。”
那人说：“大的.本事我没有，只是我有一副好嗓门，我能喊出很大的声音，使离得很远的人也能听到。一般没有人能像我一样。”
公孙龙回头问他的弟子们：“你们中间有没有喊声很大的人？”
弟子们争相回答说：“我们都能喊大声。”说着还用眼斜瞟着那个前来求见的人，显出一种不屑的眼神。
那人说：“我喊出的大声，非常人可比。”
公孙龙很有兴趣地说：“那你们比试比试。”
于是弟子们推选了他们之中声音最大的一个做代表，与那人一起走到五百步开外的一座小丘背后，向公孙龙这边喊话。结果，除了那个人的声音外并不见弟子的半点声响。于是公孙龙把那人收留下来。可是，弟子们依然不免暗暗发笑，喊声大又算什么本领，喊声大派得上什么用场呢？老师是斯文人，难道要找个一天到晚替自己吵架、吼叫的人么？弟子们都不以为然。
过了不久，公孙龙到燕国去见燕王，他带着弟子们上路了。走了一段，不料碰到一条很宽的大河。可是河的这一边见不到船，远远望那河对岸，却停着一只小船，艄公蹲在船尾正无事可干。
公孙龙马上吩咐那个刚收留的大嗓门弟子去喊船。那弟子双手合成喇叭状，放开嗓子大喊一声：“喂……要船啦……”喊声亮如洪钟，直达对岸，那对岸船上的艄公站起身来，喊声的余音还在河两岸回响，以致慢慢传到很远很远的地方。
对岸那只船很快摇了过来，公孙龙一行人上了船，原先那些不以为然的弟子深深佩服老师及那位新来的朋友。
看起来，只要是本领，它总有用处，我们不应该排斥或看不起小本领，在关键时刻，小本领也能派上大用场。
