去年冬天的一天，中午放学回家后，我听见二楼哗哗地响个不停，我立即跑上去一看，原来是我家暖气溢水箱里的水溢出来了，水箱里面还不停地往外冒着水蒸气。这可把我吓坏了，我马上跑到一楼，焦急地对爸爸说：“爸爸，爸爸，二楼水箱的水溢出来了。”爸爸听了赶忙跑上去，看见水箱里的水已经盛不下了，“突突突”的`往外冒。着急地说：“糟了，我早上忘关暖气炉了。”说完，爸爸急忙跑下二楼，赶到锅炉房，只见炉火通红，暖气烧得嗞嗞作响。爸爸很快把炉封住，又往暖气里面加了点凉水。过了一会儿，水箱里的水才慢慢地下去了。
这就奇怪了！我问爸爸：“这是怎么回事，这怎么能让水箱里的水面降低了呢？”爸爸对我说：“这里面有科学道理。这个科学道理就是热胀冷缩的原理。水加热了以后体积就会膨胀，水冷了以后体积就会缩小。爸爸早上忘关暖气炉了，炉子不停地烧，暖气系统里面的水温就会升得很高，体积增加了，所以水箱里的水就盛不下了，溢了出来。把炉封住以后，暖气系统里面的水温降低了，水的体积减小了，水面就下降了，水就不会溢出来。”
过后，爸爸又拿来了温度计，说：“这里面红色的是液体。我用打火机烧温度计的最底部，这红色的液体就会慢慢地往上升。”说完，爸爸立刻示范给我看，爸爸用打火机烧了一下温度计的最底部，那红色的液体果然上升了。这就是利用热胀冷缩的原理制成的温度计。
听了爸爸的讲解，我觉得我又学到了一点小知识。生活中，有许许多多的物体都有热胀冷缩的特性。生活中，有许许多多奇妙的科学问题等着我们去探索。
