对金先生这番话，笔者起初不大以为然，甚至有些愤愤然——世界上没有跟钱有仇的人，谁不爱钱？谁离开钱能活命？如果说老外艺术家不爱钱，那些天价艺术品，那些五花八门的画商、画廊、经纪人、拍卖公司……是谁发明的？如果画家都不要钱不卖画，那些画廊、拍卖公司岂不早就关门了？那些画商、经纪人岂不早就饿了？再说了，外国即便有不爱钱的画家，也是因为他们不缺钱，别墅住着，汽车开着……中国画家爱钱，是因为我们穷怕了，穷够了。穷则思变，穷则思富，人之常情，没有什么值得大惊小怪的。
但是，当冷静下来再仔细咂摸金先生的“逆耳之言”时，笔者的愤怒渐渐消退了——人家批评的没错啊！罗列的现象也完全是我们美术界的事实。再细想想，其实金先生还没说全，当代某些中国书画家早已经拥有了票子、房子、车子，但仍然“疯狂地追逐金钱”，甚至不惜“流水作业”“批量生产”，丢人啊！
毋庸讳言，我们的确是穷人乍富，好不容易有了发财的机会，心态失衡可以理解，爱钱也没有错，但是要成为真正的艺术家，成为大师，确实就不应按普通人的标准要求自己，仅仅把攫取金钱、获得物质享受作为“最高理想”和“终极目标”。因为一个艺术家如果没有崇高的理想、高尚的追求，思想境界庸俗，人格低下，其作品必定很难达到陶冶心灵、美化生活、匡正世风、流传后世的高度和水平；而一个国家的艺术界，如果整体沉溺在追逐金钱、满足物欲、铜臭弥漫的状况里，就确实是严重的病态了，如不痛下决心根治，最终必然要遭到国际社会以及子孙后代的鄙夷、嘲笑、批判和唾弃。
一方面，艺术家也是肉身凡胎，不可能完全抵御金钱物质的诱惑；另一方面，纯粹的艺术创作又天然排斥“唯利是图”“金钱挂帅”。那么，艺术家究竟应该如何正确、妥善地处理艺术与金钱的关系呢？
笔者认为，无论在何种背景、何种条件下，要求艺术家人人做到“重义轻利”或“重艺轻利”都是不现实的，但是如果在艺术界遵循“君子爱财，取之有道”的原则，提倡“重利重义”“重利重艺”，号召艺术家“爱钱不忘爱艺术”“爱钱更要爱艺术”，应该是既符合人性又切实可行的措施。
“重利重义”“重利重艺”，即是对待金钱与艺术二者并重，互不矛盾，互不排斥。具体到书画家个人，可以聪明，但不可以精明；可以经商，但不可以做商人。书画家与购藏者是特殊的买卖关系，出售的作品一定要物有所值，性价比合理，即让顾客花钱买到好东西。在这方面，许多中国古代艺术家做出了正面榜样，清代著名书画家郑板桥就是一个突出的.范例——他痴迷艺术，甚至弃官从艺，作书作画精益求精，水平登峰造极，但他也绝不讳言自己爱钱。在那篇著名的《润格》中，郑板桥不仅开列出真金白银的书画价码，还特别强调“要现钱”。实践证明，顾客掏钱买了郑板桥的书画，无论在当时，还是留传给子孙后代，没有一个人是吃亏上当的。
郑板桥重利，但更重义。在“鱼与熊掌不可兼得”的时候，郑板桥毅然选择“舍利取义”——他曾郑重宣布自己的画是“用以慰天下之劳人，非以供天下之安享人也”“农夫乃为天地间第一等人”。普通劳动阶层的朋友虽然少钱或没钱，但如果真心喜欢他的字画，他不仅绝不再坚持“大幅×两、小幅×两”，还经常无偿赠送。
当代画家吴冠中先生是爱艺术胜过爱金钱的典型——他在物质享受面前表现出超乎寻常的清高和淡泊，尽管作品价值连城，名声如日中天，却甘愿终生布衣蔬食，居旧屋陋室，废寝忘食、呕心沥地画画、写文章，绝对堪称金兑庭先生所说的“对艺术无比虔诚敬畏”“一心一意在做自己内心里的事情”的“纯粹”艺术家。
但愿我们中国艺术界里少一些“疯狂地丢了魂一样地追逐金钱、房子、名车”的人，多一些郑板桥、吴冠中这样“爱钱更爱艺术”或“爱艺术胜过爱金钱”的艺术家。
