但是，自上世纪中后期开始，水污染日趋严重。苏州河，以其较典型的工业污水造成水体污染，严重黑臭而全国“闻名”。城市绿化包括公共绿化和建筑绿化，在通常的印象里，绿化是百利而无一害的，然而，由于设计不甚合理，绿化同样会为城市水体的面源污染“出力”。笔者发现，在绿化周边一圈没有设置便于集水下渗的地形造型，造成在大雨时，大量雨水未及时下渗而形成径流进入城市雨水管渠。如果此时，绿化区刚施肥或喷洒虫剂不久，那么，肥料，虫剂将随雨水进入管网，最终进入水体，对水体造成污染。据国外文献可知，露天停车场的地表水径流中含有多种污染物。
人类的不文明行为，也给水体带来了许多污染。例如：直接向河流湖泊中随手乱扔垃圾；随地乱扔果皮等。这些行为将会为水带来氨氢，脂肪，油脂等污染物，甚至是金属离子。
所以，我们应该珍惜水资源，减少水污染，不乱丢果皮和乱洒农药。节约淋浴用水，沐浴露的水不要乱排放入河水中。切勿向河流中随意倾倒污水和杂物；减少使用洗洁精，购买无磷的洗涤用品。
