聊园玉带河。岸植垂柳，畔艺牡丹。
垂柳妖娆弥漫，密荫匝地，时引众多学子树下倚椅而学，而憩，惬意自得。牡丹花妍，雍容曼丽，红似火白似雪，时引无数游人流连花间，不怠不返，自适优雅。
一日，烈日当空。柳树百无聊赖，搭讪离自己最近的一株牡丹：\"喂，牡丹，人都说，红花还得绿叶扶。不过你身虽有叶，终是小叶，便是小扶。况你们现在不是一株，而是一园。大园需大扶，这大扶便是我们柳树兄弟们了。你们应该感激我们才是。\"
牡丹抬起头：\"是吗？不过，我倒不觉得。因为我的一些姊妹们的邻居倒不是你们柳树，而是杨树。它们一样的娇艳，一样的富贵。\"
柳树生气了：\"你不但不感激我，还跟我提杨树。一提杨树，我就生气了。我们柳树和杨树天生是密友。古语就说，杨柳依依，雨雪霏霏，那是多么浪漫温馨的场面……\"
牡丹说道：\"我们本是长安园的种，洛阳园的苗，如今迁至聊园，虽环境瘠化，但我们的富贵本色终是不改。\"
柳树嗤之以鼻：\"啥？富贵本色？我倒要看看，你们能富贵几何？\"说完，柳树拼命地向牡丹生长处扎根，汲取其地养分。
一天过去了，三天过去了，十天过去了……柳树很惊诧，牡丹并没有变色。还是那么鲜艳欲滴，惹人注目。
柳树很失望，但又不甘心。它心下祈盼一场暴风雨一举摧残这些自谓富贵的主儿。
烈日炙烤着大地。柳条纹丝不动、无精打采。没几天，暴风雨真的来了。未几，乌云密布，狂风大作，电闪雷鸣。树上的灰喜鹊又兴奋又惊恐，它飞舞着像个精灵，喳喳着像个逃兵。
柳条劲舞，花枝摇曳。突然一声霹雳震天，柳树被拦腰截断，树头颓落于地，一些枝桠压在牡丹花上。牡丹睁开眼，对着柳树头说：
残花败柳，这下你该满意了吧？
半截柳有些得意：\"无妨。我还可以再造一个头。明年的春天，这里还是我们的战场——\"
牡丹微微一笑：\"吾本富贵，卿本温婉，我们天天相守，共傍潋艳湖水，却不能相依相赏，实在生命一大憾事。如今，天命难违，我自去了，后会有期——\"说罢唱道：
花自飘零水自流，一心怒放，无心闲愁。
花落成泥叶归根，一生立品，心无他求。
柳树听了，很是赧颜，羞愧地低下了头。
