诗人听见茅屋有人操着柔媚的南方口音带着醉意在互相说话取笑，是谁呢?原来是一对白发夫妻，再看看茅草屋外，老夫妻的大儿子在小溪东面锄豆田里的杂草，二儿子在编鸡笼子，十分专注，调皮可爱的小儿子，趴在溪边剥着莲蓬，一边吃，一边摇着小脚，真是可爱极了!
多么幸福啊!诗人深深地陶醉在这一幅具人情之美和生活之趣的画卷中……

老夫妻的大儿子正在小溪东边的豆地里锄草 。他时而用锄头锄草，时而弯下要拔几棵草。累了他就拄着锄头休息休息会儿，豆大的汗珠从他头上落下。
而二儿子也没有闲着，他正坐在树阴下用竹条编织鸡笼，不一会儿就完成一个。一旁的几只鸡”咯咯“地叫着，好像在为自己有了新家而开心
年幼的三儿子不能为家里做事，他只好趴在溪边的草地上，一边摇着小脚丫，一边剥着莲蓬取莲子吃呢!
