敦煌最有名的景点是莫高窟、鸣沙山和月牙泉。
在东起乌鞘岭、西至玉门关长达一千多千米的河西走廊的西端，在三危山和鸣沙山之间，有一片丰美的绿洲和一个布满石窟的悬崖，这个圣地就是敦煌莫高窟。我们去参观莫高窟时，只看了约十个窟。当地文物管理部门出于对珍贵文物保护的考虑，关闭了很多石窟。第96窟里的.坐佛是世界上最大的一个室内佛，它由石胎泥塑法制成，是将大石头初步凿好后再在上面涂泥塑造。莫高窟的塑像中，除了四尊大佛是石胎泥塑外，其余的全部是木胎泥塑的。木胎泥塑法，是将树枝、稻草初步整成形后在外面涂泥制成的。
据唐代碑文记载，莫高窟始建于公元前336年，到唐朝武则天年代，已增加到一千余窟龛，以后经五代、宋、西夏、元不断重修、改造，现存石窟范围南北长约一千六百米，至今仍保存有从北魏到元代历时千年的各代洞窟492个，彩塑佛像2450座，壁画四万多平方米，被称为\"壁画艺术的长城\"。特别是婀娜多姿的\"飞天\"，在许多画面上都能找到她的倩影。有的手持莲花，有的合抱琵琶，身上的飘带在微风中飞舞，给人以飘飘欲仙的感觉。这些富有浪漫主义色彩的壁画艺术形象，广泛表现了劳动人民从事生产活动的各种场景以及各种类型的古代建筑和各阶层人们的生活习俗等内容，题材之广泛、内容之丰富、技艺之高超，均为其他石窟所罕见，堪称世界艺术史上的奇迹。
