这是一个善恶分明、惩恶扬善的故事。故事讲述了美国南北战争时期，有五个被围困在南军城里的美国北方人，趁着一个偶然的机会，乘热气球逃离了围困他们的城市。但是，热气球在飞行途中却遭遇到大风暴，他们乘坐的气球被吹裂开了一条口子，热气球在急速下降，他们为了减轻重量，把身上带的所有重的东西都扔掉了，就连水手的小刀都扔掉了。
最后气球借着风力，落在太平洋的一个荒岛上。在一无所有的情况下，他们并没有绝望，没有灰心，而是团结互助，以集体的智慧克服困难，辛慧劳动，在荒岛上生存下来，建立起幸福的生活。来到孤岛，大家一致推选工程师——哈丁上尉为首领，开始了类似原始社会的生活，他们利用岛上的资源，首先解决吃住的问题，接着他们在没有任何工具的情况下，自己动手做出了许多的生活用品，如装水的盆、做饭的锅，还有打猎用的工具，他们制造出了砖块，陶器，并种上了庄稼，养上了家禽，使自己丰衣足食。经过大家的努力，“居民”们有了两个住宅，建了一条护“城”河，存粮食的地方和汤锅都有了，还有面包吃，居民们的日子过得很充实，大家也更加团结了。他们没有一个人偷懒，各尽所能的劳动着，相互关心。他们还在荒岛上冶铁炼钢，最后他们几人在这荒岛上拥有了风磨、电报机、小农场、养殖场，他们过着自给自足的生活。
可是也有许多离奇的事发生了：一次赫伯特得了疾病，就在他奄奄一息时却意外得到了救命药；海盗船入侵荒岛却被鱼雷炸飞，剩余的五个匪徒流窜了四个月突然了，身上只有一个红点，以及一个装有了他们最需要的东西的皮箱……这些怪事使他们百思不得其解。在荒岛上度过的岁月里，每当危难时刻，当他们身处困境时，总有一个神秘人物在暗中援助他们。直到后来谜底揭晓，原来这人就是《海底两万里》一书中伟大而又神秘的主人公、潜水船诺第留斯号的发明者、反抗压迫的战士——尼摩船长。在他们到达之前，尼摩船长就已独自一人住在岛上一个岩洞里，有了尼摩船长的暗中保护，才屡屡使他们绝处逢生，化险为夷。
原来尼摩船长是六年前来到这里的。他偶然发现这些被困在荒岛，没有任何资源的落难者，但他又不愿意暴露自己。他发现这些人非常诚实，富有活力，而且相互团结友爱，船长逐渐对他们产生兴趣。他情不自禁地深入到他们生活中去。而之后尼摩还帮他们到塔布岛留字条，但回来后不久，他却因病逝世了。
他们还挽救了被格兰特船长罚在另一个荒岛上，独居了十二年而失去理智的罪犯(故事见《格兰特船长的儿女》艾尔通，使之恢复人性，并成为忠实的伙伴。这些荒岛上的遇难者虽然什么也不缺，但是他们并没有放弃返回祖国的努力，一心想着要回到自己的国家去，所以，他们每天都忙着造船。可不幸的是火山爆发，把他们所在的小岛给毁灭了，船也被烧毁了。他们几个人被困在在一块大石上，都险些丧命。最后，他们搭上了格兰特船长之子——罗伯特·格兰特船长指挥的“邓肯号”，回到了他们日夜想念的祖国。他们用尼摩船长留下的遗产买下了一块土地，大家还是继续生活在一起。
