首先因为猫有一时明亮的眼晰，即使在仲手不见五指的黑夜里，也能看清廷东西，再狡猜的老鼠也逃不过它的眼晴。它的耳朵很灵活，能够随意转向声音的来处，只要一有声音，哪怕是极细小的声音，它也能及时辫出。猫的脚趾上都有爪，这就是猫不但能在平地上疾走如飞，而且能沿璧上房，爬树跳琦，追捕老鼠的平因。猫的脚底上有一块软而序的肉，这就使猫走起路来没有响声，可以悄悄地接近老鼠，出其不意地逮住它。猫的胡须很长，感觉灵敏，能浏黄出各种洞口的大小。
由于猫有这些本领，特别善于捕捉老鼠，所以大家都喜欢猫。
会捉老鼠的猫是不大叫的，猫在摘捉老鼠时，首先向下，盯住老鼠，象老虎擂猎时一样伺隙进击，在老泉靠近的时候就猛扑上去，把老鼠咬住，然后作为美餐饱吃一顿。有时正吃得得意时，有什么声音打扰它，它就会把猎物叼到一个僻静的地方再吃。有时老鼠逃进了洞里，猫会很升心地伏在远处，注视着洞口。狡猜的老鼠经过试探，当它大胆地再出洞时，猫就以迅雷不及掩耳之势，一下子逮住了它。猫竹这种抓老鼠的本领是令人惊叹不己的。
猫时于人类是大有益处的，它的种类很多。不过，不管黑猫白猫，抓得住老鼠的才算是好猫。
应该肯定，猫的“优点”是主要的。猫就像一首歌中唱的：“狮子头上花脑门，老虎尾巴常翘起。两排胡须胜银针，一双眼睛似琉璃。别看它的个儿小，爪子一伸尖如戟。斗大的老鼠也敢抓，为民除害乐滋滋。”人们爱猫的美丽，更爱猫的虎气。

猫的胡子除了美观外，还有什么用处呢?猫的胡子的长度和它身体的宽度相同，这样，如果它要进人某个洞穴，只要把胡子放在洞口“量一量”，“胡子”放得进，说明它的身子也进得去。胡子作为“测量器”是很合适的。
猫的爪子就厉害了，脚趾呈“梅花形”，爪子像鹰钩，十分尖利。人逗它玩时，稍不小心，手就会被它抓破。猫的爪子可用于梳毛，抓东西，攀高，更重要的是逮老鼠。
