在森林里住着一只孔雀，它总以为自己很漂亮，别人都比不过它。
有一天，它离开了家，想找个人来比比美。它走啊走，走到了一个水塘边。它看见了一只青蛙，心想：不如我和这个丑家伙比一比美，它一定比不过我。于是，孔雀大摇大摆地走了过去，轻蔑地说：“丑家伙，我们来比比美，怎么样?”青蛙回过头来回答：“对不起，水塘对边的庄稼里有许多害虫，我还要过去帮忙呢!”孔雀只好失望地走了。
过了不久，它来到一座花园，看见了一只蜜蜂。这只小蜜蜂一会儿钻进这朵花，一会儿飞进那朵花，似乎忙得不亦乐乎。孔雀朝着那只小蜜蜂大声喊道：“小东西，快飞出来与我比美啊!”小蜜蜂连忙停下活，解释说：“对不起，百花就要凋谢了，我得抓紧时间采花蜜，免得没有东西吃。”
孔雀怀着一肚子的气，气愤地走了，可是没走几步，只听“扑通”一声，孔雀一下子掉进了河里，它拼命地喊：“救命呀!救命啊!”正在河边吃草的老黄牛听到孔雀的呼喊声，连忙把孔雀拉上来。孔雀望着自己被水打湿的花衣服，眼里的泪水滚落了下来，嘴里还念叨：“呜……这下我的衣服脏了，再也不能和别人比美了……”老黄牛听到孔雀的话，和蔼地说：“一个人并不能以貌取人，应该看它的品德，只有心灵美，才是真的美啊!”
从那以后，孔雀再也不注重外表，而是想着该怎样帮助别人了。
