骆驼妈妈领着一群小骆驼在渺无人烟的沙漠中跋涉，它们已在沙漠中走了好多天，因此都急切盼望着快点见到沙漠边缘那一抹绿色。热辣辣的太阳把沙子晒得滚烫，而口干舌燥的骆驼们没有了水。
虽然骆驼是沙漠之舟，但如果长时间地缺水，它们依然会渴。水是骆驼们穿越沙漠的信心和源泉，甚至是苦苦搜寻的求生目标。
这时，骆驼妈妈从背上解下一只水桶，对大家说：“只剩这一桶水了，我们要等到最后一刻再喝，不然我们都会没命的。”
骆驼们继续着艰难的行程，那桶水成了它们惟一的希望，看着沉沉的水桶，每只骆驼心中都有了一种对生命的渴望。但天气太炎热了，有的骆驼实在支撑不住了。
“妈妈，让我喝口水吧。”一只小骆驼乞求着。
“不行，这水要等到最艰难的时候才能喝，你现在还可以坚持一下。”骆驼妈妈生气地说。
就这样，骆驼妈妈坚决地回绝着一只只想喝水的小骆驼。
在一个大家再也难以支撑下去的黄昏，小骆驼们发现它们的妈妈不见了，只有那只水桶孤零零地立在前面的沙漠里，沙地上写着一行字：我不行了，你们带上这桶水走吧，要记住在走出沙漠之前，谁也不能喝这桶水，这是我最后的命令。
骆驼妈妈为了大家的生存，把仅有的一桶水留了下来，每只小骆驼都抑制着内心的巨大悲痛出发了。
那只沉甸甸的水桶在骆驼背上轮流传递着，但谁也不舍得打开喝一口，因为它们明白这是骆驼妈妈用自己的生命换来的。
终于，骆驼们一步步挣脱了亡线，顽强地穿越了茫茫沙漠。它们为能够活下来喜极而泣的时候，突然想到了骆驼妈妈留下的那桶水。打开桶盖，里面盛着的却是一桶沙子。
