I'm Li Hua from Beijing I-Iongxing Middle School. I'm very happy to learn that you're going to stay with my family while you're in Beijing.
While you are here, we'll provide you with a room of your own with a bed, a desk, a couple of chairs and a TV. You'll also have your own bathroom. Our school is quite close to our home. So we could go to school together by bike. At noon we'll eat at the school dining hall. I'm sure you'll like the delicious Chinese food there,and enjoy talking with friends over lunch. Classes in our school usually finish at 4 in the afternoon. You can then join other students in playing ball games or swimming. It'll be a lot of fun.
If you have any questions or requests, please let me know. We'll try our best to make your stay here in Beijing a pleasant experience.

你们好！5月29日，你们有的人也许还在开心的玩闹着，可是好景不长。顿时，天崩地裂，整个大地都在颤抖，不到几分钟那高大的大厦顿时被夷为平地。这剧烈的颤动停息后，只看见那一座座房屋变成一片废墟。只听见一阵阵悲惨的哭声。不以计数的房屋桥梁被那可怕的恶魔摧毁。一个个巨石像恶魔一样挡住生命之路，一阵阵颤抖就像恶魔那诡异的笑声分散那一个个美好和谐的家庭。虽然许多的人了。可是，在地震中还有许许多多的不怕危险为了朋友为了一个陌生的生命做出了巨大的牺牲。我从电视看见了许许多多的英雄。比如说地震前，向孝廉是漩口中学初三5班的.学生，现在躺在病床上不能动弹。她说，地震发生时自己在3楼的教室上课。当时化学课老师在讲台上滔滔不绝，突然整个教室晃动起来。老师慌忙喊我们跑，我们就争相往门外涌。
在走廊上时，她感觉天旋地转，站立不稳。跑到一楼时，就有楼顶的水泥倒下来，噗的一下压在她身上。我心想完了，就什么也不知道了。不知道什么时候，向孝廉第一次醒来，迷糊着没有知觉，但能从缝隙里看到外面的亮光，之后又没有了知觉。第二次醒来时，天已经黑了。我那时非常想念爸爸妈妈，我想，我得看他们一眼再。想到这里，又什么都不知道了。
他刨出了我双手肉模糊向孝廉是被同班同学马健喊醒的。他在外面喊，孝廉，你在哪里？我就醒了。他一再说，你要坚持，你要坚持向孝廉身上压着厚厚的泥土和水泥块，马健就用双手在外面刨。我哭着告诉他，马健，你别走，如果你要走，就等我了再走吧。马健说，我不会走，你是我们班上年纪最小的，也是生命力最旺盛的，这点困难难不倒你。后来向孝廉又慢慢昏过去，马健就在外面喊：坚持！坚持！向孝廉再次醒来，发现脚和手都被压得严严实实，就对马健说：你使劲拖，别怕把我的手和脚拖断，只要头不断就行。大约4个小时后，马健终于把她刨了出来。这时，马健的双手肉模糊。他抱着我，我们痛哭起来。紧接着他就背着我向学校大门口走去。刚走到门口，先前我被压住的地方旁边一堵墙壁突然倒塌。如果晚几分钟，我还会连累马健，我们两个都出不来了。讲到这里，她突然说道：记者叔叔，你们报社一定得帮我给马健颁一个见义勇为奖。没有他，我的命就没了。
千万别截肢我还要养活父母呢医生说，向孝廉的右手臂和左脚都可能被截肢。下午6点，她被送进了手术室，离开病床时，她向记者招呼说：叔叔，祝我幸运吧。我叫向孝廉，我爸爸名叫向忠诚。忠诚孝廉，我们的名字取得好吧？我家在农村，非常贫穷，哥哥是个残废。记者叔叔，你帮我告诉医生，千万不要给我截肢。我最崇拜丁磊，我想以后像他那样挣很多钱。截肢了，我怎么去养活父母呢？还有5月12日地震来临时，作为值周学生干部的宋雪正在检查午睡，她马上大声呼喊：地震了，大家快跑，快跑并迅速跑出了教室。学生们听到呼喊，快速冲出教室，奔向操场。宋雪透过窗户，看到教室里有两名同学还趴在桌子上，她大声呼喊：曾雨、韩洁，地震了。快出来，快出来！熟睡中的她们没有听到呼喊。宋雪立即冲进教室，将两位同学摇醒。两人迅速冲出教室，奔向了操场。老师开始清点人数，发现全班只差宋雪，当即成立搜救组，到废墟里寻找。第二天上午，当救援人员在教室后门仅两步之遥的地方发现宋雪的遗体时，她仍然保持着冲向门口的姿势。在生命的最后时刻，宋雪将生的希望给了同学，自己却永远地离开了。
此时的我，已经泪流满面了，我看到比我年龄小的同学们为别人于地震中，为之震撼，这将是何苦的痛，何苦的忍受，我多么不愿看到这一幕幕的悲凉惨景，可实在太不忍心了他们的书包在破碎的家园中显得那么重要，他们幼小的身躯是祖国的希望，祖国母亲盼望着他们为中华大地铺就一片金光。大大小小的捐款箱里装满了捐赠人民的一点微薄之力，医院里一大袋一大袋的鲜似乎染红了整片天空！

As we drove off from Columbia, I wanted to write a letter to you to tell you all that is on my mind.

I will always remember the first moment I held you in my arms. I felt a tingling sensation that directly touched my heart. It was an intoxicating feeling I will always have. You have been a great kid ever since you were born, always quiet, empathetic, attentive, and well-mannered. You were three when we built our house. You put up with that boring period without a fuss, happily ate hamburgers every meal in the car, sang with Barney until you fell asleep. When you went to Sunday Chinese school, you studied hard even though it was no fun for you. I cannot believe how lucky we are as parents to have a daughter like you.

You have been an excellent elder sister. Even though you two had your share of fights, the last few years you have become best friends. Your sister loves you so much, and she loves to make you laugh. There is nothing like family, and other than your parents, your sister is the one person who you can trust and confide in. She will be the one to take care of you, and the one you must take care of. College will be the most important years in your life. It is in college that you will truly discover what learning is about. You often question “what good is this course”. I encourage you to be inquisitive, but I also want to tell you : “education is what you have left after all that is taught is forgotten”. What I mean by that is the materials taught isn’t as important as you gaining the ability to learn a new subject, and the ability to analyze a new problem. That is really what learning in college is about – this will be the period where you go from teacher-taught to master-inspired, after which you must become self-learner. So do take each subject seriously, and even if what you learn isn’t critical for your life, the skills of learning will be something you cherish forever.

Do not fall into the trap of dogma. There is no single simple answer to any question. Remember during your high school debate class, I always asked you to take on the side that you don’t believe in? I did that for a reason -- things rarely “black and white”, and there are always many ways to look at a problem. You will become a better problem solver if you recognized that. This is called “critical thinking”, and it is the most important thinking skill you need for your life. This also means you need to become tolerant and supportive of others. I will always remember when I went to my Ph.D. advisor and proposed a new thesis topic. He said “I don’t agree with you, but I’ll support you.” After the years, I have learned this isn’t just flexibility, it is encouragement of critical thinking, and an empowering style of leadership, and it has become a part of me. I hope it will become a part of you too.

Follow your passion in college. Take courses you think you will enjoy. Don’t be trapped in what others think or say. Steve Jobs says when you are in college, your passion will create many dots, and later in your life you will connect them. In his great speech given at Stanford commencement , he gave the great example where he took calligraphy, and a decade later, it became the basis of the beautiful Macintosh fonts, which later ignited desktop publishing, and brought wonderful tools like Microsoft Word to our lives. His expedition into calligraphy was a dot, and the Macintosh became the connecting line. So don’t worry too much about what job you will have, and don’t be too utilitarian, and if you like Japanese or Korean, go for it, even if your dad thinks “it’s not useful.” ： Enjoy picking your dots, and be assured one day you will find your calling, and conne
