厦门有两主城区，一个是“湖里区”一个是“思明区”。思明区是厦门的市政府的所在地，而在古时候这里则是郑成功在厦门的根据地之一，而思明区则是郑成功为思念明朝而因此得名，也是郑成功带动了当时厦门的商业发展，更是他奠定了厦门几百年后成为中国一类港口城市。他也成为了让世人敬仰的大英雄。
厦门有着优越的地理条件。位于福建东南沿海，九龙江出海口，背靠漳州、泉州平原，濒临台湾海峡、与台湾本岛和澎湖列岛遥遥相对。市区面积1516平方公里，包括厦门岛和鼓浪屿两部分，其中特区面积131平方公里。人口33万。为福建省第二大工商业城市。厦门本岛内的思明、开元、鼓浪屿、湖里四个区为经济特区。思明区以商业闹市区为主；开元区以工厂区和新市区为主；鼓浪屿区是著名的风景旅游区；湖里区则是新兴的工业投资区。厦门港阔水深，不淤不冻，避风条件好，海岸线长234公里，其中深水岸线40公里，5万吨级巨轮可自由出入。目前，厦门口岸与世界80多个国家和地区有贸易往来，拥有通往香港的货运船队，不定期货轮可直达日本、澳洲和新加坡等世界大港。陆上交通也很方便，通过鹰厦铁路与全国铁路网相连。工业有一定基础，文化教育比较发达。周围地区为我国著名侨乡，且与台湾仅一水之隔，特区建设具有国际、国内良好的投资环境。
厦门成为经济特区后，城区发生了巨大的变化，一条条宽阔整洁的马路把源源不断的`商业带入了厦门。首先特区确定以发展出口加工工业为主要建设方向，现在全市已经形成以电子、仪器仪表、轻工、食品、饮料、纺织服装、五金机械、家具工艺为主的工业完整体系。各类工业企业达近300家，不仅能生产轻工、纺织等各种产品，而且还生产多种机械和海洋化工产品。全市工业产值比50年代增长了二三十倍。其次是发展旅游业、商业，并向转口贸易和过境贸易发展，使之成为我国东南地区的经济中心。为了使特区经济走向世界，特别要注重港口和机场建设。目前厦门正在东渡建设新港，包括1—5万吨的泊位和集装箱装卸桥。
可有谁知道在这繁荣的背后又有谁知道以前的厦门又是怎样的面貌呢，当时的厦门可以说是杂草丛生的一片荒岛，到处都是梯田和地瓜地，而现在的厦门，到处是都是高楼，到处都是商业街，厦门的飞速发展是不可估量的，它正在以它的发展来告诉世人厦门是海峡西岸的龙头，厦门正带领的海西的建设。
