一、吃月饼
《洛中记闻》记载，唐僖宗在中秋节吃月饼，感觉味道极美，便命御膳房用红绫包裹月饼赏赐给新科进士们。到了宋代，月饼有“荷叶”、“金花”、“芙蓉”等等雅称，其制作方法也更加精致。诗人苏东坡有诗称赞说:“小饼如嚼月，中有酥与饴。”酥是油酥，饴就是糖，其味道甜脆香美可想而知。
宋以后，制作月饼不仅讲究味道，而且在饼面上设计了各种各样与月宫传说有关的图案。饼面上的图案，起初大概是先画在纸上然后粘贴在饼面上，后来干脆用面模压制在月饼之上。满月形的月饼也跟十五的圆月一样象征着大团圆，人们把它当作节日食品，用它祭月，用它赠送亲友。
二、燃灯
中秋之夜，天清如水，月明如镜，可谓良辰美景，美不胜收。然而对此人们并未满足，于是便有“燃灯”以助月色的风俗。在湖广一带有用瓦片叠塔于塔上燃灯的节俗，在江南一带则有制灯船的节俗，在近代中秋燃灯之俗更盛。
广东张灯最盛，各家于节前十几天，就用竹条扎灯笼，做果品、鸟兽、鱼虫形及“庆贺中秋”等字样，上糊色纸，绘各种颜色。中秋夜灯内燃烛用绳系于竹竿上，高悬于瓦檐或露台上，或用小灯砌成字形或种种形状，挂于家屋高处，俗称“树中秋”或“竖中秋”。
富贵之家所悬之灯，高可数丈，家人聚于灯下欢饮为乐，平常百姓则竖一旗杆，灯笼两个，也自取其乐。满城灯火不啻琉璃世界，看来从古至今中秋燃灯之俗其规模似乎仅次于元宵灯节。
三、观潮
在古代，浙江一带除中秋赏月外，观潮可谓是又一中秋盛事，中秋观潮的风俗由来已久，早在汉代枚乘的《七发》赋中就有了相当详尽的记述。汉以后，中秋观潮之风更盛，明朱廷焕《增补武林旧事》和宋吴自牧《梦粱录》也有观潮记载，这两书所记述的观潮盛况，说明在宋代中秋观潮之事达到了巅峰。
