他的一生坎坷曲折，经历了唐朝由盛转衰的变化。但他的雄心气魄依然存在，创作了一首首脍炙人口广为流传的诗篇。
他的“会当凌绝顶，一览众山小”激励着我们有梦去追，有梦去闯，敢于攀登的雄心壮志；一句“感时花溅泪，恨别鸟惊心”将悲景寓于美景之中，使悲更悲，巧妙绝伦；白头搔更短，浑欲不胜簪”寥寥几字，一位愁绪满怀的白发老人的形象兀立在我们面前。这种境界，又有谁能媲美？
在我心中，杜甫不仅仅是一位诗人，他还是一面能反映社会现实的`镜子，一位描绘画面的心灵描绘师。
他的《垂老别》描写一位“子孙阵尽亡”的老人告别老妻出征的情形：“老妻卧路啼，岁暮衣裳单。熟知是刑，且复伤其寒。”以及在《石壕吏》中的一句“吏呼一何怒，妇啼一何苦”将差役如狼似虎的蛮横气势描绘的淋漓尽致。都赤裸裸的揭露了当时兵役制度的黑暗。他也对“朱门酒肉臭，路有冻骨”的黑暗现实进行了深刻的揭露和批判。一首《茅屋为秋风所破歌》表现了诗人推己及人，舍己为人的高尚精神和对美好憧憬。“安得广厦千万间，大庇天下寒士俱欢颜！”“吾庐独破受冻亦足！”一字一句，道出了诗人的理想（即渴望结束战争，恢复天下的美好心愿）。
不管是白居易所说的“吟咏留千古，声名动四夷”，还是韩愈的“李杜文章在，光焰万丈长”。都是对杜甫文学成就的极高肯定，他无愧于“诗圣”这个称谓，他的诗也无愧于“诗史”之称。
