关于千岛湖的由来，在原住民印第安人中有一个美丽的传说：很久很久以前，在圣劳伦斯河的沿岸，聚居着许多印第安部落。这些部落常常互相争战，很不安宁。天神为了解决这些部落之间的纷争，便赠给印第安人一座大花园，条件是要停止战争，使人民安居乐业。但这些印第安人得到花园却并没有停止战争，天神便派使者收回花园。这位使者用一个硕大的包袱将花园包好带回天国，不料在半空中包袱破裂，花园便散落成无数的碎块，坠落在宽阔的.圣劳伦斯河中，成为无数个岛屿，千岛湖便由此而来。

游千岛湖有几个深刻的印象：
一是千岛湖是个度假湖。只要能盖房子的岛都盖上了度假别墅。哪怕只能盖一间房子，也建起别墅来。甚至不够盖一间房子的岛，就探出水面，一半在陆地一半在水上。有岛就有房。房子盖得十分别致，错落有致，形状各异，风格多样，极具个性，有的豪华，有的简朴，有的富丽堂皇，有的平淡典雅，大者如巨轮，小者如漂荡在水上的一叶扁舟。房随岛盖，房岛一体，相得益彰，简直是水上建筑博览会。
二是千岛湖是个环保湖。尽管有如此多的酒店、别墅，每年有几十万人在此度假、旅游。但水质非常好，岸边的水清澈见底。水鸟与小动物随处可见，大的有蓝鹭、鹗，小的有水龟、牛蛙，大雁、野鸭恬静游弋，难得一见的水禽在这里云集。船在水中行走，突然看到前方灯塔上堆满了草，上面站着几只水鸟，原来是水鸟把巢筑在灯塔上面。人与自然和谐相处。
三是千岛湖是人文积淀丰厚的湖。乘船游走在湖上，一处一景，一景又有一个美丽的传说。比如关于心形岛哀艳动人的故事：心形岛是当时纽约旅游业大王博尔特买来送给爱妻路易斯的礼物。博尔特贫穷时，在路易斯父亲的酒店中做店员，路易斯看上了他，不顾家人反对嫁给了博尔特。
博尔特凭自己的奋斗，成为旅游业大王。为感谢妻子对他的忠贞爱情，博尔特买下此岛并将岛修筑成“心”形，以示心心相印。在岛中心建筑了一座美轮美奂的欧洲古堡式宫殿。同时，在心形岛旁边的小岛上另建一座小别墅孝敬岳母。但不幸的是，1904年宫殿刚建好还在装修中，爱妻便病逝。博尔特悲痛不已，遂令停工，并决定从此不再续建，也不再踏足此岛，以1美元的价格卖给了美国政府。人们感动于博尔特对爱妻的真挚感情，遂将此岛命名为心形岛，也称爱情岛。这也是1800多个岛屿中，唯一一个美国政府拥有的岛屿。
四是千岛湖是最有国籍意识又最分不清国籍的水域。千岛湖中美国与加拿大的划界原则是不将岛分开，国界线绕着岛走，曲曲折折。我们的游船离码头不久，就进入美国水域，并主要在美国水域中游览。湖中每个岛上都挂有国旗，只挂一面的，就是这个岛与买岛的人都属于同一国家。如果加拿大人买了美国的岛屿，那么就要挂两面国旗，加拿大国旗比美国国旗挂得要高一截;如果美国人买了加拿大的岛屿，则美国国旗挂得比加拿大国旗高一截。
心形岛是游览区的精华，游客一般都要到岛上参观。但该岛属美国政府所有，必须办美国签证。为此美国政府专门在这个岛上设了一个签证处。千岛湖还有一个最短的“国际桥”：在一个叫扎维孔的岛上有座小桥，它像扁担一样，一头挑着加拿大，一头挑着美国。这座桥全长仅9.75米。它的主人是美国通用汽车公司的总裁。据说这位总裁先是托人买了一个美国境内的小岛，后来他发现小岛太小，不能建大房子，便又买了紧靠旁边的加拿大境内的大岛莎维岗岛，并在岛上建了富丽堂皇的度假屋。后来他又在两岛之间建了一座小桥，此桥横跨加拿大和美国之间的水道，成为世界上最短的跨国桥。导游笑说，主人在加拿大煎着鸡蛋，可以抽空到美国踢踢腿、伸伸腰。
