本然，即事物的本来样子、内在规律。语文教学作为一项原本就比较复杂的活动，要穷究其“本然”，当然不是很容易，加之人们的认识也需要不断地深化，所以到现在为止我们还没有能够穷究语文教学的“本然”，这也很正常。问题是，在我们的语文教学活动中，我们到底做过多少穷究“本然”的工作？我们的语文教育工作者有多少人在关注和思考着语文教学的“本然”？考察一下，情况并不乐观。虽然我们有那么多语文教育理论工作者，有那么多研究语文教学问题的组织和阵地，更有各种研究语文教学问题的成果不断问世，但这些研究要么只关注教材、教法等操作层面的很具体的话题，要么只热衷于一些与教学实践离得很远的让人一时很难琢磨的非常抽象的命题，而对于“语文教学究竟是怎么回事”这样的问题则无暇或不屑涉及，讨论很少。包括《语文教学大纲》这样的专门用来对语文教学进行解释和规定的最权威的文件，虽经一次次修订，但直到新课改的《语文课程标准》出台以前，还很少能从上面直接找到对于语文教学“本然”的说明文字。
至于广大的一线语文教师，这些语文教学工作的具体实施者，只要深入他们中间都会知道，那教不完的课、改不完的作业以及学生永远也考不完的试等各种事务早已使他们穷于应付、疲惫不堪，除极少数人外，大都满足于靠师承下来的知觉感知过日子，很少有人还对包括语文教学的“本然”在内的较深层次的理论问题发生兴趣。不少语文教师，辛辛苦苦教了一辈子语文，但到退休那一天，若问他“语文是什么”、“语文教学要干什么”，他都回答不出来。这倒不是因为这些问题被理论家搅得过于复杂而让人不好回答，而是他们压根儿就没有想过这些问题。就连那本教学大纲，也往往并不被老师们看重。新课程改革实验以来，虽然报刊上对语文课程标准的个别表述争论不休，但不少课改实验学校的老师们还没见过这本“课标”。有些学校虽给老师们发了，但也被束之高阁。“何以为教？贵穷本然。”可我们的语文教学，不仅未穷“本然”，甚至不问“本然”，那么怎么能指望它科学、高效而“左右逢源”呢？
所以，改革我国中小学的语文教学，当务之急是要广大的语文教育工作者尤其是一线的教师要寻求和思考语文教学的“本然”。
语文教学的“本然”是什么？正如事物的发展都使它逐渐远离其原点因而要追寻其最初的、本来的样子就越来越困难一样，数千年的语文教育实践，近百年的语文独立设科，使得要穷究语文教学的“本然”确实不是多么容易的事情。也正因如此，所以在语文教学理论界才有那么多争论，比如对于语文学科的性质的认识。但我们如果换一种思路，也许会找到一种相对便捷的途径。探寻事物的本质，寻找事物的本原，可以有两种办法：一种是分析论证，一种是追根溯源。前者因为采用的是就事论事、理论推导的办法，似乎更“科学”，所以一向备受欢迎。但这种看似严密的方法却往往使简单问题复杂化。由于分析角度的不同，论证过程的不同，因而很难得出一致的结论，结果是不仅原来讨论的.问题没有得到解决，反而引发出各种无谓的争论。后者则正好相反，虽质朴一些，但却要简单可靠一些，正如寻找一条河流的源头，只要沿着这条河逆流而行便是；如果能站高、站远一点，采取遥感、遥测的方法，则更方便。寻找语文教学的“本然”，无疑应该采用后一种方法。只要能够弄清楚当初人们设立语文课程的意图或者人们让孩子学习语文的动机便可。这个动机和意图，就是语文教学的“本然”。
这样说来，关于语文教学的“本然”，其实是一个不需怎么探寻便可获得大致结论的问题。那些诸如“语文姓什么”之类的问题专家们可以各执一词、争论不休，但对于学校里面最初为什么要设立语文课程，或者人们为什么一定要让孩子学习语文这样的问题，应该说在认识上没有多大分歧，因为连农村不识字的妇女都很清楚她们把孩子送到学校“读书”（学语文）是为了什么：不就是要老师教他们读书识字、说话从而通情明理成为有文化的人吗？可以说，这个教学生“读书识字、说话作文”，既是语文教学的目的，也是语文教学的内容，还是语文教学的基本方法。一句话，这就是语文教学的“本然”。遗憾的是，这么浅显的道理，长期以来却被我们日渐丰富的教学理论给淹没了，也被广大的语文教师给淡忘了。我们会说语文课要教学生“正确理解和运用祖国的语言文字”，“全面提高学生的语文素养”，就是不会说要教学生读书识字、说话作文；我们的语文教师在课堂上可以叫学生做各种各样的事情，可以将大学中文系毕业生都不知道的语言知识、文学知识讲给学生，可以将一篇通俗浅显的课文分析得让谁都不明白，就是不让学生去读书、去写字、去作文、去说话（这些事通常都是被安排在课外）。最终，使语文教学失去了“本然”，失去了自我。
返璞归真。语文教学必须找到“本然”，回归原点，按照语文教学应有的样子教学生学习语文。令人欣喜的是，经过多年的讨论、实践和探索，借助新课程改革理念的推动，语文教育终于迎来了这一天。《语文课程标准》虽然还存在这样那样的缺陷，但已经有了明确告诉人们语文教学是怎么回事的文字。现摘两段：
语文是实践性很强的课程，应着重培养学生的语文实践能力，而培养这种能力的主要途径也应是语文实践，不宜刻意追求语文知识的系统和完整。语文又是母语教育的课程，学习资源和实践机会无处不在，无时不有。因而，应该让学生更多地直接接触语文材料，在大量的语文实践中掌握运用语文的规律。
阅读是搜集处理信息、认识世界、发展思维、获得审美体验的重要途径。阅读教学是学生、教师、教科书编者、文本之间的多重对话，是思想碰撞和心灵交流的动态过程……教师既是与学生平等的对话者之一，又是课堂阅读活动的组织者、学生阅读的促进者……教师的点拨是必要的，但不能以自己的分析讲解代替学生的独立阅读。
语言明快，意思清楚，道出了语文教学的“本然”。用这些话去衡量我们现实的语文课堂教学，就会发现我们离开语文教学的“本然”有多远了！作为“最重要的交际工具”的语文，必然是“实践性很强的课程”，必然要以使学生掌握这种工具即“培养学生的语文实践能力”为根本目标，而读写听说的语文能力也只能是在大量的读写听说的语文实践中才能养成，单靠教给学生系统完整的语文知识、单靠老师对课文的讲解分析，单靠给学生布置大量的课后书面练习题，是决不会获得这些语文能力的。但多年来我们中小学的语文课堂教学，大多却恰恰就是这么做的。我们的老师，太看重“知识”、太喜欢或习惯于“讲课”了。笔者近两年曾几次在中学语文教师和刚参加完教育实习的高师中文专业学生中做过调查，当问及“你认为一节好的语文课应该是什么样的”时，有很多人的回答都不约而同地讲到一定要将教材上的“语文知识”给学生“讲扎实”；问及“你认为在语文课堂上老师讲得多好，还是讲得少好”，回收的问卷中60%以上的选择是“讲得多好”，在紧接着的关于一节课教师讲授用多少时间的选项中，80%的被调查者在“25~35分钟”后画了勾。到中学听课经常会看到这样的现象：本来教材上一个定义外加两个例句的几行文字，老师一讲解动辄就是半节课、一节课的时间。至于讲课文，那更是教师的基本教学行为了。只要是课文，不管是文言文还是白话文，不管是中国作品还是外国作品，也不管是还是散文，教师都是非讲不可的。即便是并不需要教师做多少事情的“自读课文”以及一个单元结束留给学生“随便读读”的一篇诗文，教师们也是表现了高度的“责任心”，一如既往地力求“讲深、讲透”。很多课文，教材编者明确要求“要在反复朗读的基础上加深感受和理解”，但这种“反复朗读”和“感受”只能是在课外，课堂上依然是教师的分析讲解。结果，这种教师“以自己的分析讲解代替学生的独立阅读”早已成为语文课文教学的基本事实。如此全然不顾“语文教育的特点”，背离语文教学的“本然”，难怪语文教学少慢差费、高耗低效！
所以，寻求语文教学的“本然”，当前最需要做的，还是要引领语文教师真正进入新课程，认真学习和努力执行新的《语文课程标准》。如果我们每一位语文教师都能牢记和领悟“课标”中的这类关键性的话语并且“化为践履”，付诸实施，不再热衷于给学生讲授系统完整的语文知识，不再留恋于做课文的分析员、讲解员和翻译员，不再将自己横在学生与文本之间干“第三者插足”的事情，而是立足于让学生通过大量的“读书识字、说话作文”的语文实践来“掌握运用语文的规律”，放手让学生“直接接触语文材料”，在学生与文本和教科书编者充分“对话”的基础上再与学生进行平等的“对话”，那么，语文教学就可恢复自己的本来面目，从而取得应有的效果。
吕叔湘先生1963年4月在《文字改革》杂志上发表的《关于语文教学的两点基本认识》一文开头有这么一句话：“我觉得每逢在种种具体问题上遇到困难，长期不得解决的时候，如果能够退一步在根本问题上重新思索一番，往往会使头脑更加清醒，更容易找到解决问题的途径。”这里所说的“根本问题”，也就是叶老所说的“本然”。要使语文教育工作者尤其是作为语文教学活动实际执行者的广大语文教师，不管在面对什么具体问题的时候，也都不忘“根本问题”，不断思考和追寻着语文教学的“本然”，牢牢把握住那“万变不离其宗的教学生读书识字，教学生阅读作文”②，那么我国中小学的语文教学就会按照自身的规律行事，从而走出困境，走向科学和高效。
