Sperber和Wilson主张用“关联原则”来解释人类的交际。他们认为，语言交际是一个认知过程，交际双方之所以能够配合默契，是因为有一个最佳的认知模式，即“关联”。关联由两个因素决定：语境效果和心智努力。人类认知活动的目标就是在认知过程中力图以最小的心智努力获得最大的语境效果。为了达到这个目标，人们必须把注意力集中于最为“关联”的信息，以获取信息和语境的最佳关联。最佳关联是指在话语理解时以一定的心智努力获得足够的语境效果。
交际是否成功关键在于人对事物之间的联系或关联的认识。人类在认知过程中往往以最大关联为取向，但在实际交际过程中我们只能期待产生一个最佳关联，即听者在理解话语时用最小的认知努力获得足够的语境效果，并以交际为取向。关联理论认为语境是一个在互动过程中为了正确理解话语而存在于人们大脑中的一系列假设，所以关联理论的语境不限于现实环境中的情景或话语本身的语境，交际中的语境不是固定不变的，而是动态的。而最佳的语境效果是由明示——推理模式提供的。明示，即说话人明白无误地表达出自己的意图；推理，即听话人从说话人提供的信息中推断出说话人暗含的意图。其中，听话人的推理是理解话语的核心，而关联则是听话人推理的基础。对话语进行推理就是在话语与语境假设之间寻找一种关联，关联选取得当就会获得足够的语境效果，有了语境效果，就能正确理解话语，使交际获得成功。

作为学生，每个人都应该有同桌，可是之前的我却没有同桌。因为我是后转去的同学，所以每个人都有同桌我没有。那段时间，我是多么羡慕那些有同桌的同学啊！记得第一天来到这个班的时候，我左看右看一个人都没有，每当老师上数学课要两个人组成一组时，而我只好和老师一组，不会的题也只好自己在那算，不能打扰到附近的同学，只能下课时去问同学，每次上美术课时有两个人一起完成的项目我也只能一个人做。我什么时候能有一个同桌呢？我心里想着，盼着。知到五年级，那一天老师接到了一个电话就出去了，老师回来的时候却带了一个女同学，他的个子高高的，眼睛小小的却很有神，头发长长的，我多么希望他能和我同桌呢！
老师环顾了一下全班，只有我这里有一个位置，老师就让他做到了我这里，我高兴极了。心想：终于不用自己一张桌了。可刚开始上第二节课时谁也不理谁，可是就在数学课上，我有一道题不会，因为其他同学都已经填上了，而我却不会，在那里急得直冒汗，他好像看出了我的心思，对我说：“你好，我叫王玉，我是你的新同桌，你是这道题不会做吗？如果你愿意我告诉你可以吗？”我点点头。她耐心的给我讲解，还给我出题练习，做了几道题我终于会做了。我开心极了，他也很开心。从那时开始我们互相帮助互相学习，你帮我我帮你。
成绩都有所提高。又到美术课，老师布置的课堂任务是剪纸，他帮我准备材料，我来剪。最后我们剪出了全班最漂亮的福字，老师表扬了我们，我们开心极了。这就是我的同桌，我喜欢我的同桌，是它让我不再孤独寂寞，是她让我感到了有同桌的快乐，有同桌的感觉真好啊！
