书中的人有皇帝，有将军，有后宫嫔妃，更多的是普通百姓。第一章就带着我们跟随一个唐代百姓早起，遛弯，穿过长长的大街，绕过一座座坊，去东西两市购物。
他穿什么，戴什么，住什么房子，使用什么交通工具，花钱多少，有何目的，都事无巨细的交代。仿佛这位“导游”不是唐人，而是邻居胡大爷，赵伯伯。当然，也可以是隔壁老王。
除了我们最关心的衣食住行外，隋唐人的婚姻与家庭，礼仪与规范，宗教与娱乐等也分门别类详细阐述。在轻松的文字之下，我们仿佛置身于历史画卷当中，看着那一个个人物来了又走，嬉笑怒骂。他们不是背景板上的魂灵，更不是金銮殿下磕头如捣蒜的路人甲乙丙丁，而是有有肉的我们的先祖。
