1937年的南京，因日本的入侵很快就沦为一座城。满眼望去，皆是尸，生者像那无头苍蝇般乱窜，只求找到一栖之地以便保住性命。唯一仍拼抵抗的，只有寥寥无几的中国士兵。
可是教堂外那些搔首弄姿的风尘女子在这个严肃甚至危险的时刻，却还是如往常那般轻慢嬉戏。这不禁让人唏嘘，她们真的是在向乔治求助吗？
电影伊始，无论是乔治还是女学生，没有人喜欢她们，更别妄提“尊重“，即使是看似热情的男主角，也只是冲着美色而去。她们粗俗、，与矜持、高贵的女学生简直是云泥之别，因此也不配踏入这片还残留这着的净土。
当仅存的洁净被污染，暂时的宁静被打破，谁又曾想到正是这些低贱的风尘女子散发出的人性之光保护了孩子们的纯洁。她们清楚日本军队的邀请没有想象的单纯，所有人都知道这意味着什么。也许当初一句“姐姐们替你们去”只是为挽救孩子们别做傻事所找的借口。可是回到地窖，谁也没有多少片刻的轻松。玉墨的提议有人犹豫，有人反驳，但最终这些女人的善良战胜了内心的恐惧。

最后电影的结局只讲述了约翰含泪开着载有学生的卡车逃出了南京，却并未交待女人们的下场。但谁都明白包括她们自己也心知肚明，前方等待她们的是也不能轻易解决的可怖。
鲁迅曾言，真正的用勇士敢于直面惨淡的人生，敢于正视淋漓的鲜。这是他为纪念并称颂刘和珍所写的。虽然这些风尘女子手无缚鸡之力，但在我看来“勇士”二字，她们当之无愧。或许这十二人在百年之后只化作一抔凄惨的黄土，永远无法摆脱那令人唾弃的卑贱身份。可我想她们并不会在意那所谓的身份与可笑的名誉，她们只是想做便做了。由此，才让我们真正看到污秽外表下，原来藏着的是一颗出淤泥而不染的心。
