是唯一不能飞的潜水性海鸟。共有17个品种，分布在南半球，南极数量极多。
企鹅的头、颈、背和翼全都是黑色的，但胸部、腹部是白色的，看上去像穿着燕尾服的绅士。
成年企鹅平均高70—80厘米；体重4—6公斤。不到一米高的企鹅只有4——6公斤，但看他们肥嘟嘟的身材……真想不到，它们还是游泳健将呢！
从前我不知道企鹅住在哪？它们的天敌是谁？后来通过查找资料全都明白了。
企鹅是在平坦的地面上用小石块筑成的蝶形凹坑，直径约40——50厘米。这便是企鹅的家，专业人员叫企鹅的家为“巢穴”。
企鹅的天敌有两个，其一为一些动物，另一为天气。贼鸥是企鹅在陆地上的主要天敌，企鹅离开巢穴捕食时，巢中的企鹅卵（蛋）就很容易成为贼鸥的口中之食。刚刚能独立谋生的幼企鹅也因为缺乏生活，在陆地上成为贼鸥的啄食对象。另外，幼企鹅入海后又常常被凶猛的海豹吞食。
天气是企鹅的另一个天敌，夏季里时常出现的暴风雪常常把企鹅蛋冻坏，或者把幼企鹅冻。
由此看来，幼企鹅对于天敌真是无可奈何，亡率高达50%以上！
如今，人类登上南极后，更给企鹅带来了不幸，数以万计的企鹅因感染人类带去的病毒而亡，难道人类也变成了企鹅的天敌？
人类总是一味地去观赏、认识企鹅，却往往忽略了保护它、爱护它，搅乱了它们正常的生活。
“喜欢它并不错，但喜欢就要让它们生活得更好”。如果因人类而使这些可爱的动物“灭绝”，不但我们这些喜欢企鹅的人会伤心欲绝，所有人类也会后悔的。
不仅仅是企鹅，我们应该爱护每种动物。不要“失去了才懂得珍惜”。
