从前有一个善于射箭的人，大家都知道他射起箭来，百发百中，所以都很敬佩他。他受到大家的称赞，便以为自己的本领天下第一，不由得显出骄傲自满的神气来。
有一天，他又在靶场上表演他那百步穿杨的绝技。他一箭射出，把又细又软的柳枝射断了，围观的人大声叫好，要求他“再来一次!”这时一个卖油的老人经过，看了后，便冷笑地说：“这有什么了不起，只不过是手法熟练些罢了!”
他听了不由得大怒，大声喝斥：“你这老头子有什么才能，竟敢如此藐视我?”老人回答说：“我哪里敢藐视你，我不过是从几十年酌油卖油的生活中，知道做熟了的事情，就会找出窍门罢了!”
说着，老人就从他的.油担子上取了一个葫芦，在葫芦口放上了一枚有孔的铜钱。
然后，老人打了一勺油，高高举起油勺往葫芦里灌，那油勺里的油就像一条线似的穿过钱孔进入到葫芦里。油倒完了，老人还把铜钱拿起来给大家看，铜钱竟没有沾到一滴油渍。大家看了都称赞不已，老人微笑着对射箭人说：“我并没有什么了不起，只是熟能生巧罢了!”射箭人很不好意思的走开了。

One day, when he was shooting arrows in his own garden, an old oil peddler happened to pass by. The old man laid down his shoulder pole with its load, stood to one side, watched askance for a long while and didn't go away.
一天，他在自己的花园里射箭。有个卖油的\'老头儿正好路过这里，放下担子，站在一旁，斜着眼睛看了好久仍不离去。
